Licence Law

A general reference in real estate to the regulatory controls imposed on real estate practitioners by a governing body. Licence/registration laws are generally put in place to regulate the activities of licensees/registrants, while pursuing adequate consumer protection, and maintaining defined standards in the leasing, sale, or exchange of real property. Provinces have differing real estate licence laws.
Application

The primary goals of most licence laws are:

- To provide educational requirements to ensure that registrants are competent to deal with the public;

- To screen applicants for registration by reasonable methods to ensure that they are suitable to deal with the public; and

- To monitor and investigate the actions of registrants to secure the public interest.

The a__ociation of Real Estate License Law Officials (ARELLO) was established as an international federation of real estate licence law officials to a__ist each other in the administration and enforcement of licence/registration laws. Figure L.4 contains the Mission Statement and Statement of Purposes of ARELLO as excerpted from the Digest of Real Estate License Laws, United States and Canada (ARELLO, 1996).
