The first (and shortest) version of the song was called 'Murderistic Women'. This version was first played live on John Peel's radio-show Top Gear on June 25th 1968.

'Careful With That Axe, Eugene' was issued as single B-side in December 1968. One year later, a third version was recorded as 'Come In Number 51, Your Time Is Up' for the the film 'Zabriskie Point'.
