Doubravánek Finnegan's wake Lyrics
(irská lidová)
1. Tim Finnegan lived in Walker Street
A gentle Irishman, mighty odd.
He had a brogue so rich and sweet,
And to rise in the world he carried a hod.
For you see he'd a sort of a tippling way,
With a love of the liquor Tim was born.
And to help him on his way each day,
He'd a drop of the creature every morn.
Ref.: Whack for the hurray,
take your partner
round the floor ye trotters shake,
wasn't it the truth I told you,
lots of fun at Finnegan's Wake.
2. One morning Tim was rather full,
His head felt heavy,
which made him shake.
He fell off a ladder and broke his skull,
So they carried him home
a corpse to wake.
They laid him out in a nice clean sheet,
And laid him down upon the bed.
With plenty of whisky around his feet,
And a couple of dozen around his head.
Ref.: Whack for the hurray,
take your partner
round the floor ye trotters shake,
wasn't it the truth I told you,
lots of fun at Finnegan's Wake.
3. Tim's friends a__embled at the wake,
And Mrs. Finnegan called for lunch.
First they brought out tea and cakes,
Then pipes and tobacco,
and whiskey punch.
Then Biddy O'Brien began to cry,
"Such a lovely corpse did you ever see.
Arragh! Tim, mavourneen,
why did you die?"
„Ah, none of your gab" said Biddy Magee.
Ref.: Whack for the hurray,
take your partner
round the floor ye trotters shake,
wasn't it the truth I told you,
lots of fun at Finnegan's Wake.
4. Then Peggy O'Connor took up the job,
„Oh Biddy," she said
„you're wrong I'm sure."
But Biddy gave her a belt on the gob,
And left her sprawling on the floor.
Each side in the war did soon engage,
Twas woman to woman and man to man,
Shillelagh law was all the rage,
And a row and a ruction soon began.
Ref.: Whack for the hurray,
take your partner
round the floor ye trotters shake,
wasn't it the truth I told you,
lots of fun at Finnegan's Wake.
5. Then Mickey Maloney raised his head,
When a gallon of whiskey flew at him,
It missed and landed on the bed,
The whiskey scattered over Tim.
Bedad! He revives! See how he rises!
Tim Finnegan jumping from the bed,
crying while he ran around like crazy:
Thundering blazes, you think I'm dead?"
Ref.: Whack for the hurray,
take your partner
round the floor ye trotters shake,
wasn't it the truth I told you,
lots of fun at Finnegan's Wake.
(Joyce wrote about Finnegan's Wake. It was James Joyce, who wrote about Finnegan's Wake.)
